Chronic pain can be debilitating. It interferes with our sleep, messes with our thought patterns, and we can be distanced from everyone else around us. It can feel as though they just don’t understand or appreciate what we are going through. What’s more, it often goes hand in hand with other symptoms of a long term health condition, such as mobility issues and weight changes. We may be unable to work or live our lives in the same way that we used to. Our independence may also have suffered too.
This may be a new reality for you now, and you’ll also be in the midst of getting to grips with a changed life. Alternatively, you may be recovering from an operation and know that improvement will come eventually. Either way, it would be extremely helpful to have some tools to help you deal with pain.
First, we will look at understanding pain. What is it, how it is useful, and how pain pathways sometimes become over-sensitive. Understanding what’s going on in your body can be very empowering, and help you make decisions about how you are going to work with your pain.
It’s important to know that pain can also be exacerbated by trauma, and I have some gentle but very effective techniques for working with trauma. These have been very extensively used for working on veterans, amongst others. I often use them in my work with PTSD Resolution, but they are so gentle that they can be used just as well with children.
Then, using a series of guided visualisations, I’ll show you how to gain some type of control over your pain. Even the guided visualisation itself can provide a welcome break from constant pain, and I’ll record a relaxation uniquely for you.
Finally, with any health condition comes a change in energy levels. You’re more than likely not able to do what you used to and this is frustrating. We will look into balancing activity and rest to conserve energy and maintain a more consistent level of activity without triggering flare-ups of pain.
I can’t promise that you’ll be pain free from now on, but you will have more of a feeling of control and understanding around what’s going on. If pain or a long term health condition is impacting your sleep, quality of life and relationships, we can also look at practical ways to work on these.
People in pain are often anxious or irritable, or both, and you’ll be shown techniques that can help bring your emotional arousal down. If this is going to be a large factor in your life from now on, we can also delve into what you can control in your life, and how you want your future to look.
Above all, therapy for pain relief reduces the psychological distress often associated with pain and enhances your ability to function, mentally, emotionally and often physically.
